The Wylam Song Cycle : A Railway200 Celebration

The Lit & Phil, 23 Westgate Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 1SE

Delighted to be singing and playing with Bronwen Davies-Jones and singers from Tyne Valley Voices to reprise a special performance of a newly commissioned song cycle to mark and celebrate Wylam’s significant railway history at the beautiful Lit & Phil in Newcastle.

"Join Wylam based singer-songwriter Gareth Davies-Jones and his daughter (and singer-songwriter) Bronwen Davies-Jones with members of Tyne Valley Voices choir as they perform an engaging and entertaining song cycle about Wylam’s unique and significant railway history. The song cycle was written by Gareth and Bronwen and arranged by local musicians Simon and Gail Davies-Fidler and Len Young as part of the Wylam Railway200 Arts Project to help the village mark the national bicentenary celebration of the birth of the modern railway. The songs were originally performed as part of a gala evening in the village at Wylam Winter Tales Festival in February 2025. Jointly commissioned by Wylam Parish Council, Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership and Wylam Winter Tales the song cycle takes a lyrical and sometimes whimsical look at Wylam’s famous and not so famous railway engineers, it’s place as an influential coal, iron and engineering hub and even the feud (and friendship) between George Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel ! Gareth and Bronwen will also perform a selection of songs from their solo work and from their repertoire with Howay The Lasses."
